What started as a grassroots movement quickly turned into a trillion dollar ecosystem, at a growth rate comparable to the early days of the internet. Balance was co-founded in the early summer of 2017, six months before Bitcoin made its first run to $20k USD. We started with an initial goal of building a self-serve platform for retail investors and were quickly stopped in our tracks as we could not find a versatile custodian partner to turn it into reality. So we built one. We quickly realized we weren’t the only ones with this problem and pivoted the business, turning custody into our flagship product.

We spent the next couple of years maturing our solution and evangelizing our vision. We became experts in the laws and regulations that governed digital assets and although being in one of the strictest regulated financial markets in the world, we committed to remain proudly Canadian.

Five years since inception, the third iteration of our custody platform secures hundreds of millions of dollars worth of assets making Balance not only the oldest Canadian digital asset custodian, but also the largest. Our journey continues as we expand our product into providing a fully integrated post-trade financial services solution encompassing custody, settlement, and clearing.
